Dr. Rohan Jotwani MD, MBA, Academic Anesthesiologist and Interventional Pain Specialist at Weill Cornell Medicine, published a case report in Interventional Pain Medicine. More specifically, in this case report he used 3D Organon VR Anatomy for pre-procedural planning for a spine injection near a tumor.
As he mentioned: “The software and hardware utilized are commercially available with current tools and do not require additional coding to implement. This facilitated real-time, actionable modeling, where multiple users were able to view available imaging and adjust the model to fit the patient’s anatomy. Then, this information led to actionable consequences, allowing determination of the optimal fluoroscopic angulation, which may differ from what an interventionalist might conventionally utilize for TFESIs.”

Generally, Virtual reality (VR) is a tool that can help with pre-procedural modeling and moreover, practicing for complex procedures with anatomic variation. In the article, you’ll find a demonstration of the case of a 64-year-old woman with neuroforaminal compression from a schwannoma. This case, was modeled with 3D Organon, in order to facilitate pre-procedural training prior to a transforaminal epidural steroid injection.
